Black and gold 500 ml can with a traditional Saxon brewery crest — a cooper shouldering a barrel, wagon and hop bines behind him. Schwarzbier is a German black lager: dark as stout to look at, but brewed as a lager, so it drinks clean and crisp rather than heavy. Roasted malt gives coffee and dark-chocolate notes without the thickness of an ale.
The only dark beer in the range, and the only Schwarzbier — a style that is genuinely hard to find outside Germany. Brewed to the Reinheitsgebot, the 1516 German purity law, which permits only water, barley, hops and yeast. Zittau sits in the far east of Saxony where the style originates, and the can says so: "Real Saxon Beer." At 4.5% it is also the lowest-alcohol beer on the shelf, so the dark colour is not a warning about strength.
