A premium Cypriot halloumi produced under Protected Designation of Origin status, made from a blend of cow, sheep, and goat milk with a hint of mint. Famous for its high melting point, this cheese is ideal for frying or grilling until golden brown on the outside while maintaining a satisfying, squeaky texture inside. A versatile and beloved Mediterranean cheese.
A 225 g vacuum-sealed block of pale, firm, folded halloumi with visible flecks of dried mint through it. Halloumi's defining property is that it does not melt — it holds its shape under a grill or in a hot pan, going golden and squeaky outside while staying soft inside.
This is one of the few PDO-protected products we carry, alongside the Isigny butter. PDO — Protected Designation of Origin — is legally enforced: defined region, defined method, third-party controlled. It is not a marketing word.
Two things on the ingredient list are worth pulling out:
It is a genuine three-milk halloumi — cow's, sheep's and goat's milk. Cheaper halloumi is often cow's milk alone; the traditional specification uses a blend, and the sheep and goat milk are what give it depth rather than blandness.
It uses non-animal rennet, so it is suitable for vegetarians — which most traditional hard cheeses are not, including the Gäsene Hushållsost. For a vegetarian that is a real difference, and it is rare in a traditional cheese.
Mint is the traditional halloumi seasoning and it is in there as a listed ingredient.
