Polish gingerbread hearts, half dipped in chocolate and half in white sugar glaze. Pierniki are a Polish Christmas fixture — softer and more cake-like than a British gingerbread biscuit, and spiced with clove and coriander as much as ginger.
The two coatings are the point: the chocolate side is rich, the sugar-glazed side is sharp and sweet, and most people develop a preference.
Serving them: with coffee or tea, straight from the pack. They stay soft for weeks in a sealed tin and are a common thing to put out for visitors through December.
