Why this tastes different
European soft drinks are typically sweetened with sugar, not high-fructose corn syrup. Corn syrup is the default sweetener in American soft drinks; in Europe it is uncommon, and most people notice it straight away in the taste and the finish.
Six artificial colours — among them Tartrazine (E102) and Sunset Yellow (E110) — must carry a warning about children’s attention on anything sold in the EU. Rather than print that on the bottle, most manufacturers reformulated with natural colouring. European fruit sodas also tend to carry more real juice than the same brand name does elsewhere.
Sugar is still sugar — we are not telling you this is a health drink. The difference is in the flavour and in what else is in the bottle.
