A pesto genovese made without pine nuts — sunflower seeds do the work instead. Built on Basilico Genovese P.D.O. and Grana Padano P.D.O., so the two things that make a real pesto taste like one are both protected-origin and both on the label.

🥜 About the nuts — and the other tub

This one is the maker's nut free pesto, and the pack carries no "may contain" nut warning of any kind.

Do not confuse it with the Mamma Emma Sicilian pesto, which comes in an almost identical tub and does contain cashew, with a may-contain warning for walnut and pine nut. If you are buying for a nut allergy, check that the lid says nuts free pesto genovese.

The egg is not obvious from the ingredients: it arrives as egg lysozyme, a preservative inside the Grana Padano. The pack declares it, and so do we.

Using it

Stir it through hot pasta off the heat with a spoonful of the cooking water. Do not boil it — pesto splits and goes bitter when you cook it hard.
