Kraš Napolitanke Chocolate Cream, 11.53 oz (330g)

Baked to European rules. Potassium bromate and azodicarbonamide, both used to treat flour in American baking, are not permitted in the European Union. Six food colours that are still common in American biscuits and iced cakes must carry a warning on the label here, so European bakers stopped using them. Titanium dioxide, used to make icing and coatings an opaque white, has been banned as a food colour in the EU since 2022. It is the same reason the ingredient list on the back of the pack is short.

Croatian Napolitanke — crisp wafer sheets layered with 72% chocolate cream, in three 109 g packs so the rest stay fresh once you open the box. Kraš have been making them in Zagreb since 1911 and they are the wafer every Croatian household knows.

Wafer with chocolate filling (72%): sugar, wheat flour, vegetable fat (palm oil and shea oil), fat-reduced cocoa powder, full-fat soya flour, chocolate 1% (sugar, cocoa mass, cocoa butter, emulsifier: soya lecithin, artificial vanilla flavour), salt, acidity regulator: sodium bicarbonate.
