Baked to European rules. Potassium bromate and azodicarbonamide, both used to treat flour in American baking, are not permitted in the European Union. Six food colours that are still common in American biscuits and iced cakes must carry a warning on the label here, so European bakers stopped using them. Titanium dioxide, used to make icing and coatings an opaque white, has been banned as a food colour in the EU since 2022. It is the same reason the ingredient list on the back of the pack is short.
Eugenia is the biscuit every Romanian grew up on — two soft vanilla biscuits pressed around a thick slab of cocoa cream, individually wrapped so one lives in a coat pocket or a school bag. Dobrogea have made them in Constanța since the 1960s and the recipe has not been improved, which is the point.
- 360 g — ten individually wrapped bars, 36 g each
- 40% cocoa cream filling
- Flavoured with rum and vanilla, the way the original is
- Produs de post — made without dairy or egg, so it suits Orthodox fasting
Ingredients
White wheat flour, sugar, palm fat, water, low-fat cocoa 3%, raising agents (ammonium hydrogen carbonate, sodium hydrogen carbonate), iodised salt, flavours (rum, vanillin). Cream content 40%.
Allergens
Contains wheat. May contain traces of milk and soy. The bag is labelled a fasting product, which in Romania means no dairy or egg is added — but the "may contain" line is still there, so it is not suitable for a milk allergy.
Product of Romania. SC Dobrogea Biscuit SRL, Constanța.
